There have been a lot of rumors so far about Samsung’s next upcoming flagship device(s). Let’s summarise what we know so far based on reliable and other sources – that said, keep in mind that some of these may end up being fake, so take it with a pinch of salt.
Two variants – Galaxy S9 & S9 Plus
Just like last year, Samsung is expected to release two identical devices. The devices are expected to look the same, but are also expected to have different hardware components this time around.
Galaxy S9 renders
The smaller, normal S9 is expected to come with a single camera on the back, while the S9 Plus is expected to have dual shooters – Samsung will likely follow Apple’s footsteps and charge extra for the Plus device for having a better(dual) camera unit inside.
Dimensions: 147.6 x 68.7 x 8.4mm
Galaxy S9 Plus renders
That’s not all, according to rumors: The S9 Plus will also allegedly have more RAM and storage. The normal S9 will have 4GB RAM and 64GB storage while the Plus version will have 6/8GB RAM and 128GB of storage. Note that these will be expandable via a MicroSD card slot as before, also expected to see the same IP68 water and dust resistance certificate.
Dimensions: 157.7 x 73.8 x 8.5mm
In terms of power, both devices will have the latest Snapdragon 845 in the US and Samsung’s own, latest Exynos chipsets in all other markets/regions.
The screen and all other aspects of the two devices are expected to be the same, but of course, improved panels.
The design is expected to stay the same, but with a lot of minor improvements, you can see these in the videos shown above.
We have heard recently that Samsung has patented the under-screen fingerprint sensor, however it will likely not make it to the Galaxy flagships this year. The reason is unknown, but if it turns out to be true, it may likely appear for the Note Series. The fingerprint sensor will apparently be placed on the back, the difference this time around will be with the placement. Instead of placing it on the right side, it will finally be placed in the center, underneath the camera unit. The flash and additional microphone will be placed on the right side this time around.
Thankfully, the Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, NFC/Samsung Pay, Iris Scanner and the 3.5mm headphone jack are also here. The Bixby button will also make a return for the S9 duo.
When should you expect it?
The CES rumors have quickly faded away – and while we do believe the Galaxy S9 flagships will certainly be at the event – we believe that the devices will only be showcased privately for Samsung’s investors only. The Galaxy S9 duo will most likely launch at MWC Barcelona in 2018. (Between 26 February – 1 March) According to a report, it will be officially unveiled on 27 February in Korean Time.
