Xiaomi has finally revealed their new competitor against the Gaming oriented Razer Phone – the Black Shark.
The Black Shark offers better thermal, and overall the best gaming performance. It has the latest internals and a somewhat bulky design with a massive battery, let’s dig deeper and see if it’s a worthy gaming device.
At first glance, you can see that there’s a 6″ IPS LCD FHD+ display. The DCI-P3 coverage is at 97% but sadly there’s no 120Hz panel to be found. The Black Shark is powered by the latest Snapdragon 845 chipset and has 2 versions available on start: one offers 6GB RAM + 64GB on-board storage, while the second option includes 8GB RAM + 128GB of storage. As you’ve might expect, it does not have an expandable storage via a micoSD card slot.
Xiaomi has also said that thanks to it’s multi-stage integrated liquid cooling system, they are able to bring the CPU temperatures down by 8C degrees.
The fingerprint scanner is placed underneath the display at a comfortable, conventional location. There’s also a dedicated ‘Shark’ button on the right side of the device which allows you to clear all hardware resources and dedicate everything for a smooth game performance.
The device has a speaker on the bottom, but luckily the earpiece also can act as one and provide stereo sound for a more immersive gaming experience. The microphone apparently is able to provide great sound quality for voice calls, and block out gameplay noise to help users communicate while-in-game.
The design overall is clearly intended for gamers, while the front looks sort of standard of today’s devices, the back is where you can tell this is a completely different story – or device. The X shape on the back is said to be in place to give a better grip to users, and it also acts as an antenna.
Much like on the Nintendo Switch, you cal also attach a GamePad to the bottom of the device. It’ll offer a few extra functions in games and will certainly make a few things easier. The first 50,000 buyers will receive it for free. The Gamepad has a 340 mAh battery and it connected via Bluetooth.
There is also a dual camera setup on the rear, it includes a 12MP f/1.75 aperture lens as well as a 20MP f/1.75 sensors and a dual-LED flash. The selfie camera is 20MP with a f/2.2 lens.
The device comes with JOY UI on top of Android 8.0 Oreo. Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of Xiaomi MIUI features to be found too. Also, there’s a massive 4000 mAh battery to keep you up and running with your favourite games.
The Black Shark is available for pre-order via JD.com until 20 April. After that, it’ll be available for purchase in both Polar Night Black and Sky Gray colour variants. The 6+64 combo costs CNY 3000 (€387 – $477), while the 8+128 combo will cost 3400 (€452 – $557). The Gamepad is sold separately at CNY 179 (€23 – $28).
