Today is the day that Xiaomi finally made the MIUI 9 update available for a handful of devices as well as the release of their new mid-ranger MI 5X device.

The list of devices that are getting the MIUI 9 update can be found on this list.

Here’s what you can expect in the new software update, if your device will get the update of course.

The new MIUI 9 update will be based on Android 7.0 Nougat and it will bring some great features to your devices, three of which are highlighted including the – Image Search, Smart Assistant and the Smart App Launcher.

The Image Search is something very similar to Google’s Photos application. You can enter words into the search bar and the app will scan your images and show you the related pictures that match with the keyword you’ve searched for.

The Smart App Launcher will be able to open up applications based on what is open on your device’s screen. It will be able to open up e.g.: Google Maps if you are talking to your friend about going on a trip to somewhere or meeting up at your nearest cafe. It can also show related information, if for example you are reading about your favourite singer or artist.

The Smart Assistant is very much like Google Assistant, on paper at least – hence the naming. It is supposed to allow you to search for photos and texts. It is unclear at this moment how it all will work out, but we’ll report back once it becomes available for us to test out. If you happen to have these features in the very near future, feel free to drop us an email with your experiences!

In the MIUI 9 update, launching applications should also become a lot faster now thanks to the CPU acceleration and better haptic feedback made to the whole system. If you only use one app or a few particular apps, the most active one will be prioritised by the system to allow smooth and seamless experience.

Next, the Xiaomi Mi 5X

Xiaomi has finally revealed the new midranger – the Xiaomi Mi 5X

The phone will be equipped with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 chipset paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of on-board storage. Luckily, the storage is expandable via a MicroSD card slot up to 128GB of storage.

The display is a 5.5″ FHD screen. The camera on the back is the same as the one that can be found on Xiaomi’s latest flagship – the Xiaomi Mi 6. The dual-camera setup consists of 12MP f/2.2 rear cameras and a 5MP camera for selfies. The device will have a fairly large battery with the capacity of 3080 mAh, so it should be able to last a full day with average to moderate use.

The new midranger will be available in Gold, Black and Rose Gold colours and will cost CNY 1499 (~$220 or ~€190)
